Sen. Bong Revilla on Monday questioned the National Housing Authority (NHA) and the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council officials about the declining occupancy of housing units in the country.

During the Organizational Meeting and Briefing of the Committee on Urban Planning, Housing and Resettlement at the Sen. Jose P. Laurel Room, Revilla referred to the results of the Census of Population conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) which states that occupancy rate of urban resettlement, which was at 92.61 percent in 2010, declined to 92.57 in 2015. In 2000, urban occupancy resettlement is at an all-time high of 99.68 percent.

NHA and HUDCC officials pointed out that the main reason behind the decline in occupancy is employment. Most of the beneficiaries said that their relocation is offsite from their work place, not only making it hard for them to travel, but also incurs additional daily expenses.

Since most of the houses are already awarded to the beneficiaries, most of the occupants either abandon or sell their units and return to their previous homes.

The veteran senator promised that he will look closely into the matter and study possible win-win solutions for both NHA and the housing beneficiaries.

Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
